There is no "typical" smell of a vagina, although some would like you to believe they smell like everything from musty bread to vanilla ice cream with sprinkles. Vaginas come in all types of shapes, sizes, colors, and odors.

Now, in all seriousness, there are some that do smell like fish. When one does, the female may have bacterial vaginosis, a type of vaginitis.

It results from an overgrowth of one or several organisms that are normally present in the vagina. As certain organisms multiply like cockroaches, they produce chemicals that cause a fish-like odor characteristic of bacterial vaginosis.

Signs and symptoms of bacterial vaginosis might also include grayish-white discharge and vaginal itching or irritation.

Bacterial vaginosis isn't serious and it's usually treated with prescription medications, i.e., antibiotics.

What causes bacterial vaginosis? Things like poor hygiene, too much douching (ironically enough), and "losing" a tampon (when a tampon rises to the wider, top part of the vagina and lodges there, leading to infection).

Other STDs can also cause the 'fishy' smell. There is no reason it should EVER smell like that naturally. Whoever has this problem, if it's you or your girl, ya'll need to go to get checked. That odor is one of the first signs of an STD. You (or her, if you're a guy) have an STD. Go get on medicine. They can make you sterile and all kinds of sh!t.
