no, there not bad for you. despite scepticism, ther have been no reported side affects. and why should there be? its protein, not steroids or any other bodybuilding agent. if they were bad for you then chicken, nuts, milk, or any other high protein food would be as well. they, like many things, have advantages and disadvantages.
advantages- whey protein has the highest biological value (ie. the highest ammount of concentrated and varried amino acids compared to any other protein) , they are convenient, there okay if your a veggy.
disadvantages- expensive, taste like sh1t, give you chronic wind, possibly stomach pains.
personally, I try to get my protein from food, but every now and again, if a sandwich or whatever is just not conveiniant, then a shake will do.

Drink at most 40 g worth of that type of protein per day. Less or even equal to that is fine.even a little over is ok. 1 g protein (total not from shakes) per pound of body weight is all anyone needs.
