If this is a new thing for you, you should be concerned. Look also for very dark urine, upper abdominal tenderness, loss of appetite, itching, all indications of acute hepatitis (liver inflammation,) most common causes drugs or alcohol, or viral disease. A few are treatable, others are not. Seek medical care.

The term jaundice implies yellowing, and since the eyes and urine turn yellow, the disease is called jaundice. There are many types of jaundice and since you did not mention the age and the duration of the jaundice, I shall try explaining.

At first you can have congenital jaundice and jaundice during infancy. It is usually due to some manufacturing defect and may or may not be treated. Then you have jaundice due to increased breakdown of red blood cells and consequent high metabolism of the hemoglobin. This can be managed and there are certain subtypes which can be cured.

As a layman, jaundice usually denote infectious cause and there are various types A to G. These settle down on their own but take time. There is no way you can speed up the cure as these are because of viruses. Some types of rare cases are met with bacteria, rickettsia and other microbes- these are curable if dealt with at the earliest manifestation of illness.

Jaundice can also come up as a terminal event resulting from liver failure and liver transplantation can cure the terminal illness.
