no salt, salt increases bp
At 16 with a BP that high, he needs to see a physician and possibly be put on some type of medication. If it going untreated he could end up with serious helath conditions and if the BP continues to rise, possibly even have a stroke. Diet alone doesn't always lower a person's BP.
maybe losing some weight would help. Did you know that 66% of americans are over weight? Don't let your son become a statistic. Developing good eating habits now and maintaining a healthy diet will help him out tremendously in the long haul. Stick to the food pyramid, I guarantee it works.
GO to the doctor..
They will be very good at advising all the things/foods that should be avoided and perhaps be able to give something to help lower it safely too.
I've been monitoring my BP for 20 years. I can tell you that drinking a lot of liquid boosts the BP, and it also thins the blood and can even make you faint.
For me neither garlic, nor cutting foods out or putting foods into the diet work. Salt, however, makes you hold your liquid. Seems to me that sugar to an extent does too. Remember that canned foods have a lot of preservatives (salt/sodium is a preservative and it preserves "everything" that comes in can form), so he should try changing over to fresh vegetables, fruits.
I would suggest he drink less liquid and cut down on the salt and sugar intake, and exercise more.
low salt,do not add salt to his food once it is on the plate, avoid fast food but have a check with your doctor just in case there is a heart problem,is he overweight?
For teens right values should be within 115-120 mmHg. and 75-80 mmHg. and yours really seem to be too high. The causes can be too many and two years ago I even read about a research in USA accusing the great abuse of any frizzy drinks as responsible for the high BP in many teens. Anyway, I believe it's the case for your brother to visit a doctor.
If you're one of these people who fart about taking blood pressure measurements you should become a nurse. Otherwise, leave it to the medical profession. Get him to see a Doctor if you're worried, don't play with medical toys.
if you have any nurse friends ask them to bring him some blood pressure samples the doctors get um all the time but moniter ur son when he takes them in case of reaction
You didn't say how much your son weighs? He could have hypertension, I would take him to the Doctor, the same one where he has gone to get his bp checked. There are medicines he can take.
It could be because of the amount of salt consumed by teenagers. Take care of the heart and the BP will take care of itself (it should be under 139 and 89, high normal).
better take him to a doctor ! !
That's pretty high for a 16 y/o
120/80 is normal
more exercise is a good one
salt is necessary to any persons diet, as it helps with a wide variety of things, however, eating too much, just like any other single food or drink on earth, is detrimental to your health. the best way to have a heathy diet, is go back to basics, don't go for the frozen or tinned foods, they are high in salt as salt is also a preservative. fresh fruit, fresh veg, low salt, low fat, low cholesterol foods will help with blood pressure. try putting him on pomegranite juice, it tastes lovely and helps to clear cholesterol build up in the arteries which in turn causes high blood pressure.
if your son has a weight problem then education now is the most vital thing, if at the age of 16 he has high blood pressure then continued weight gain, or failure to lose weight will continue to have a detrimental effect on his short term health, never mind long term.
he needs to take up a sport now and his diet needs an overhaul to put as much heathy food in him as possible.
other reasons for high blood pressure if he does not have a weight problem could be diabetes or stress, if he is not overweight, or even if he is then you need to make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.
