Hi, my dad is experiencing pain on his lower abdomen on the outside but its not affecting his eating or digest

but its painful just under the umblical, is it serious, what could be the cause, he was also diagonised with high blood pressure last month. He is 60 years old.

Answers:
Hernia or diverticulitis. Hernias are not usually too serious unless they become "strangulated" - where a bit of the intestine pushes through the abdominal muscles and its blood supply gets cut off. That can be very serious, since the dead tissue can poison the body. He needs to get a physical from a doctor.

Also, he needs to get on some meds for the blood pressure. High bp can cause serious damage to arteries and organs like the kidneys. Walking 30 minutes a day can prevent many problems and help with blood pressure, stress and weight control. If he starts now, he may be able to avoid nasty things like the bypass surgery my Dad just had.

At this age, hernia is not an uncommon occurance..You may want to check and see if there is any puffiness around the area.. How long has it been present? .. lots of things to consider! Is his abdominal wall distended.. does he have a large stomach (fat belly)? So many things are left out of the questions, it is difficult to get an accurate picture of what is actually going on.
you can get a hernia at any age, if he has a soft bulge, it's probably that, especialy if he tries to do crunches all the time. could be anything, paracites, needs to go get it checked if it percists past 2-3 weeks.
