Just kidding, weight loss and sculpting your body isn't rocket science or an intangible mystery the way it seems to be made out to be. You must burn the layer of fat on your stomach first. walking, swimming and bicycling are a great way to do that, and yes, sit-ups will help greatly. Try laying on your back and raising your legs in the air, doing sets of repetition along with sit-ups and crunches

if there's any fat there first do sustained cardio work (long runs, maybe cycling). it's the time that's important, not the intensity, because you want to get into the 'fat burning zone' which takes roughly 30 mins.
then, when you've got a flat-ish stomach, look into the right exercises to achieve definition (buy men's health or other mag, or take a free trial at a gym and speak to an instructor). apparently sit ups do more harm than good.
in any case, don't try and turn fat into stomach muscle straight off. the muscle builds up underneath.

We are what we eat, but we are at least as much what we don't do. Calorie intakes in 1900 and 1950 were higher than they are now, we just don't use them up!

Take a healthy amount of exercise 30-40 minutes of vigorous exercise per day 4-5 days a week. I hate to think what percentage of the UK population does that 2%? 5%?

Most people say 6-pack when what they mean is 8-pack. The rectus abdominus (your abs) is divided by tendons into 8 defined regions therefore giving you an 8-pack. Do this instead to build all of the muscle and tendon divisions and build core strength while protecting your spine. Hang from a chin up bar and perform hanging leg raises. Keep your legs straight and try and raise them as high as possible towards the bar. Move slowly without sway or momentum. I guarantee when you can touch your toes to the bar for 3-sets of 10 using a slow tempo and straight legs your 8-pack will be awesome!
