Surgery to enlarge the nasal cavity is an option. Also, if you have a weight problem, try dieting. I hope this helps.
Sleep Apnoea is a sleep disorder where the sufferer frequently stops breathing during their sleep. Breathing can stop hundreds of times repeatedly every night for up to a minutes duration, sometimes longer in extreme cases.
Some of the problems facing people with untreated Sleep Apnoea syndrome are:
work performance and reliability diminish
danger to themselves & work colleagues vis-a-vie health & safety
severe reduction in short term memory
severe disruption to social and family life
a real threat to their quality of life
possible early death
The only definite way to diagnose Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is to spend a night in a sleep lab undergoing a "polysomnogram." This is probably what your sleep specialist (consultant) will recommend. You may also be advised to lose some weight (if overweight) and limit or abstain from alcohol before sleeping, while awaiting treatment, as they can aggravate the symptoms of Sleep Apnoea.
Your doctor should refer you to a sleep disorders expert. On rare occasions, a doctor may not take apnoea seriously enough. It has been reported that some people have to actively prod their doctors a bit. If your doctor seems inclined to pass the potential of apnoea off as relatively unimportant, you may want to consider getting a second opinion.
There are only a few effective treatments for SA. They fall into several categories: weight loss, surgery, dental appliances, and a breathing-assistance device. The most popular and most effective is the latter one, the use of a device which delivers air under slight pressure to the airway by way of a nasal mask when sleeping.
Surgery is an option, however it's only effective in 50% of the cases and that's only for candidates that are considered good. Also, this is only effective in Obstructive Sleep Apnea. There is another one Central SP, and a mixture of the both.
CPAP, which is what I use, is somewhat effective. It's hard to tolerate at first, but it's worth it. I find it helps too, if I sleep on my side. Good Luck
CPAP machine works wonders. Go and get a sleep study done. You will wish you had done it earlier. ZZZZZzzzzzzz
