Alcohol DT's?

Does anyone know the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal? My friend stopped drinking three days ago and he smells horrible, like metal. His stomach is hurting pretty badly, also. How long will this last?

Answers:
He will sweat real bad, be sick to his stomach. get the shakes real bad, hallucinations awake or asleep. I'm sure I am missing some, but it is not very pretty, it can take anywhere from a week to a month or longer that depends on the person. Try to get him in the shower not a bath and let warm water run on him. I wish your friend good luck and you too.

DTs are usually accompanied by "shakiness", unsteady gait, and often times dellusions and/or hallucinations. Seizures are also possible. Is there a possiblity he could have been vomiting blood? (the smell of metal). Chronic alcoholism can cause varices of the veins in the digestive tract, leading to internal bleeding. In the stomach, it may mean vomiting blood. In the intestinal tract, it may appear as dark tarry stools.

Withdrawl from alcohol is something that I truely believe should be under observation from a professional. Especially if signs of gastrointestinal bleeding are present. Also, seizures can happen without warning.

Hospitalization with a detox protocol (usually ativan is given to reduce the risk of seizures and control the tremors and high doeses of vitamins are used to help with the deficienices that are common with alcoholism) is often indicated. Have your friend seek professional help before he falls and hurts himself, has a seizure or bleeds to death.
The reason he has a odor is he is sweating the poisions out of his body and the stomach cramps are from with drawls of the alcohol. I would say that they will be other symptoms and signs of with drawls.

If your friend has been an alcoholic for a while after he gets through the with drawls he needs to contact some type of organization for support to help him stay clean.

I admire your friend for his courage and I hope he sees it through and does not give in to his addiction. Tell him to hang in there and it is better to tough it out for a litttle while than to keep drinking and develope serious health problems and die a agonizing death. I work in the health field and I have seen people die from problems relating to alcoholism and it is pitiful and such a waste of life.
