How long must I wear a finger splint?

I had my finger slammed in a door. No swelling, just a bruise and bending it is painful. My husband bought me one of those metal splints w/ foam on the inside so I wouldn't move it. I don't think I broke it. but how long would someone NORMALLY wear one of these things?

And BTW I'm one of those people that hates going to the doctor! I'm not goin to the DR over this. I would not voluntarily go ,unless I was dragged there.

I understand not liking doctor's, but sometime reason must take over. You need to see a doctor and get an xray. A finger fracture that is not treated properly can lead to reduction in motion and use of the finger and permanent misalignment and disability. If it is your ring or pinky finger you can be casted in an ulnar gutter cast and reevaluated in 3 weeks. Thumbs can go in thumb spica casts. Don't let an irrational fear put the future use of your hand in jeopardy.

good luck.
Hmm, i hate going to the doctor too but your finger sounds like it needs medical attention. Don't be a child about it, just step up and see what needs to be done.

My wrist was giving me a lot of problems, and I assumed it was carpal tunnel or I had strained it exercising... I finally went to the doctor and found out that I have circulatory problems and arthritis.

I imagine it's easier for doctors to spot these kind of troubles while your injuries are healing.
same here doctors are not nice folk,
you need to keep it on depending on the damage on to your finger, fractures usually take 2-4 weeks to heal and broken bones will take 3-6 weeks to heal.
If you felt a lot of pain from the door it was probably neither of the above. If you see swelling then dont put the splint too tight and only for a week.
2-4 weeks but do not keep it covered all the while, it needs air to breath and heel properly, ice and heat should be used 2-4 times a day, this keeps the blood flowing for faster heeling, plus finger movement are a must, even a soft ball orange or lemon squeeze them often. These are mostly first aid problems, it will go away, but should be x-ray ed for possible breaks and fractors. Plus when you go to the doctor it would be treated as nothing.
you may well have fractured it, happened to me, hurt just like a bad bruise, but after 2 weeks went to hospital, x-ray confirmed i broke finger bone and they had to break it again or would heal disfigured, go get it checked
