Does sciatica ever go away on it's own? Anyone ever had it go away with physical therapy alone?

I have a mild case of it. Not sure what's causing it yet. My doctor said to try physical therapy before getting an MRI done.

Answers:
It can go away...and mild cases can be managed with a few simple principles and one or two daily exercises that take less than 30 seconds. The first is posture and body mechanics...if you do not correct these, I can garauntee you that your sciatica will NOT go away.

Most cases of sciatica are thought to be due to an abnormal position of the vertebral disc. Repeated motion testing done by a physical therapist who has undergone MDT training (aka the "McKenzie method") has been show in research to reach a 90% accuracy rate in detecting the presence of "disc derrangement"...therefore, it is very common to not have an MRI before going to PT.

My advise is that you find a provider with MDT experience where the focus is on your specific treatment response to movement. Every case is indidualized and education on prevention of reoccurance is the focus of treatment.

Good luck.
It goes away more often than not, and an MRI isn't going to do you much good unless you're contemplating surgery, so your doctor is making the sensible call for now. If your symptoms get worse, or if you have new symptoms or prolonged pain, then he'll want one, but for now, a little patience is warranted.
Sure it can go away, thanks the doctor didn't do an MRI, he is a competent person taking care of your disease in conservative matter.
ON THE CONTRARY IT IS NOVEL TO GO FOR A MRI AS SOMETHING WILL DEFINTELY COME OUT WHICH MAY BE NORMAL, STILL TO DAY SCIENCE HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE WHOLE ANATOMY JUST A CLICK HERE AND THERE.
Some people do very well with physical therapy. I did not, but I have permanent nerve damage due to an injury. Try the therapy and see how it goes. Hopefully you will be one of those people who does well. If not, certainly get the MRI. Best wishes.
My experience with it is that it comes and goes. Driving long distances can aggravate mine. Ibuprofen works well for me
