Bone graft anyone?

I know pain is subjective - however my son is having to have a bone graft from hip to connect his scaphoid bone (in his wrist) cause he broke it 5 months ago - and didn't know it was broken.

He seems to think he will be able to work as a bagger at a grocery store two days after surgery.

How long realistically do you think before he can start working again?

I told the head bagger to take him off April's schedule completely. He's having surgery on April 9th.

based on my mom's recent experience with surgery ..it seems that you'd be sleepy for almost 2 days after surgery because of the anesthesia. and the 3 days after that it's quite difficult to move about because of the surgical area itself.. you'd want to keep it stabilize to lessen the pain.

have YOUR SON talk to the doctor so he can REALISTICALLY anticipate what it would be like after the surgery rather than you telling him which he might think you're being just being an over-protective parent... teenagers rarely listen to their parents anymore but they do listen to other authority figure in this case the doctor.

when is he taking the test? if it's 2 weeks after then that's fine but if it's just days after...then better postpone it since he might be too medicated and still be in too much pain to get a good score. let him take a special test...explain to the school the circumstances...

hope this helps! good luck!!
I had three bone plugs put into my neck the second best sports Dr, in the nation did the surgery and I got the bones from the bone bank as they are tested and cleaned and are better able to reconnect than one from ones hip wich alot of times causes further pain worst than the pain that was being endured to begin with go with the bone bank if there is a choice.
I had a bone graft with a cadaver bone to the ulna. I would think that he would be in pain for several weeks. Why didn't you ask his doctor? Give him a call and he can realistically tell you how long. But I can say this, bone pain is a **! You can have it forever after an injury. You just learn to live with it. Godloveya.
