Can somebody tell me what's wrong?

I'm just getting over the same thing...it's just a cold type infection with a hacking cough.and yes it hurts, but it does eventually go away...there is a lot of it going round at the moment...in the USA as well as the UK and probably other countries too.
Does your cough have a runny nose to it?
If not did your MD swab you for strep?
Otherwise the advice here is right. I second a virus with a brutal sore throat and cough - fever.
It's been running through the kids in the area (son had it daughter has it I had it)..
Rest drink a lot of clear liquid, motrin
If you aren't better by Monday or get worse call your Doctor for some further testing [mono, strep, etc]
Google "croup". You are a little old for this type of virus but it sounds similar. It sounds like a virus which has to go away on it's own in a week or so. You can treat the syptoms like you would croup. Croup is a virus that swells the airway around the vocal cords and makes a cough sound like a seal barking.
Rest, fluids, maybe some ibuprophen, humidified air and hot showers are basically the treatment.
