If you have frontal lobe damage & then your personality changes, do you still remember they way you were?
For example if you were in a car accident and you have so much frontal lobe damage and you become a mean, unhappy, nasty person, do you remember the way you were in the past (kind, goodhearted.) because the part of you brain that stores memory is not damaged.?
Answers:
The prefrontal cortex and frontal lobes as a whole are the location of human personality, decision making, and for the most part thinking. Damage to these areas will result in damage such that there is a slight chance that the person will be able to remember how they were. Other parts of the brain store different memories, some of which are of how he/she was before, but the fact remains that there is a fundamental, unchangable personality alteration. If you are interested, there is a famous case of this with regards to the individual named Phinneas Guage, who in the 1800's took a tapping iron through his cheek and out through the top of his head. This injury damaged the connection between his limbic system (emotional center) and frontal cortex (emotional regulation). Thus, he was unable to regulate his emotions and experience the aforementioned fundamental personality change.
Do a google search, and you'll find pictures of Phinneas. He (parts) are on display in Harvard University.

My Mom had a stroke in the frontal lobe & for a while was very mean & hatefull but just to me, not anyone else. She did not know she'd had a stroke but when the Dr. told her, it seemed to make a big difference in her attitude & behavior. She still has some days when she's not very pleasant to be around but they aren't all like that. She has memories sometimes of the way things were but nowhere close to all the time.
