What to do at the first sign of cold sores?

Answers:
Carmex works for my husband. First sign and then repeatedly throughout the day. My best friend swears by Hydrocortisone ointment. You can buy this at any drugstore. It is safe and she finds it very effective. First sign and then follow the directions on the tube. Per her, getting a cold sore at all can be an indication of being low on the essential fatty acids (those "good oils" that the health practioners are talking about now -- Omega 3-6-9 . . . ). The body apparently needs these "good oils" and when deficient can show up with cold sores. My friend swears by it. AND has kept her cold-sore free. Thought I'd pass it on.

apply Abreva - it is available over the counter. Or see a doctor for a prescription of Zovirax, and apply it at the first sign of a cold sore. they won't prevent them, but usually help them heal up a few days quicker, with less pain than if you leave it alone.

there is also a prescription pill you can take to help prevent outbreaks, but it is pretty expensive.
dab a little vicks on it
Herpilyn cream is an excellent remedy.
Also take a high potency multivitamin with iron.
Lysine 500 mg 3-4 times a day on an empty stomach helps some.
Take lysine pills four times a day. I believe the standard dosage is 250 milligrams. The other way hurts like hell and leaves a temporary mark but does work. Put bleach on the end of a q-tip, open up the cold sore with some sharp object, stick the q-tip as far into the open cold sore as you can. Oooooh does this hurt. But it will get rid of the cold sore. The thing is the bleach will burn the skin around the cold sore and leave a burn mark. The mark will fade in a few weeks.
gargle with warm water mixed with oral antiseptic, and put alum powder on the spot.
put alum powder on it
campofenic spelling wrong but you know what i mean
