I have very severe migraines. Right now I am prescribed fiorinal with codeine...Plz help! The fiorinal works about 85% of the time when taken as prescribed, and I never want to take more than it says because my doctor told me not to. However, the other fifteen percent of the time the migraines are so bad (usually a strong vomiting feeling with dizziness, sensitivity to light and noise and extreme pain). This doesnt happen very often, but I was wondering if anything is prescribed as a second line medicine for such occasions. I looked online and found that srtronger medicines exist but they are very controlled. Is it unheard of for a migraineur to get an Rx to something like Dilaudid or Demerol? Should I consider asking my doctor? I don't want him to think badly of me so I am asking on the forum first. Thanks so much for your inputs.

First of all i want to say i feel for you-i know how painful and debilitating migraines are as i have been suffering with them for yrs--the very first thing i was ever prescribed was fiorinal with codeine and half the time it didnt work but it also can give us rebound headaches alot of times-
I now take a drug called Maxalt and they have it in pills that you swallow and also ones that you put under your tongue and they dissolve and if i feel a migraine coming on i take it asap and the migraine goes away within 30 minutes or so -i have only had to take 2 a couple of times and that when i had the extra severe ones where i actually had vomiting instead of just nausea.
Also i have tried all the natural cures they say helps prevent them and the thing i have found that works for me is taking magnesium everyday-of course it dont work immediately but after i had been taking it awhile my migraines are less frequent...Reserach shows that many people that get migraines have a magnesium defieciency and that is why taking may help.
The Maxalt is good becasue there are no side effects like drowsiness--but if you dont have prescription coverage it is very expensive to pay for about 110.00 for 9 pills the pills come pre packaged so you can carry one easy in your pocket or purse.
Yes you should be talking to your doctor. There are alot of different meds for these. My sister gives herself shots for these all the time. Since you are being treated already your Doctor knows that they are bad. So please talk with you r doc and get the meds you need to function.
There's a new development in migraine theory:

There is no medicine totreat any pain. Hence there is no med for migraine, head ache, RA and all sorts of pains. Acupuncture is the best treatment for all pains. But doctors never tell to patients as a part of business.
Pl follow acupuncture and avoid problems of side effects of drugs.
Headaches can be caused by minor problems
like eyestrain, lack of coffee or more serious reasons
like head injury, brain tumors, encephalitis and
meningitis. Taking painkillers continuously can
have harmful side effects, so it is better to
modify your lifestyle. More information available at
OMG I totally understand.I once had a migraine for nearly 3 months and missed sooo much school & lost ALOT of weight cuz I was so sick! I totally get it!!

Ok, so anyway, when you're in a massive migraine episode, if you CANNOT get it to go away with meds...ets, you may need to get a cortisone injection...they hurt a bit but they work WONDERS! You will feel the wave of joyful, blissful painlessness quite quickly; however you will have to go to the ER to get it.

As for the everyday-type migraines, I've tried EVERY SINGLE 'Triptan med out there, some did nothing, others made it worse! Zomig helped for a while, but then the dosage would need to be increased until it was just no use anymore. I finally got so fed up that I resorted to ibuprofin. Horrid (and dangerous) and it is, I treat a migraine with a high dose of caffeine (in the form of steaming hot coffee), a nap in a pitch-black room and 2000mg of ibuprofin. yeah, that's a crapload of pills and my DR threw a major fit about me destroying my liver early in live & all that.

I'm not trying to OD on motrin, but when you got a migraine, you'll do just about ANYTHING to get it gone...am I right? ;)

Sorry, I probably didn't help you out at all, but maybe I did. Hope you get your migraines controlled better than I do. Good luck! ;)
