my dad is 67 years old. he suffers from hyper tension. it fluctuates sharply at times too. what should he do?
Answers:
the first advice i would give you is to begin praying before bed at night, studies show this lowers systolic bp by about 10 points in laot of individuals, also a few asperin before bed, this also lowers 2-3 points in most people. next i would say try and lower sodium, this is tricky in modern life, because so many things are loaded full of it, but bringing it back to the rda recommended 2000 mg per day will have a large impact if he is signifigantly over. the next peice of advice is if he smokes stop, his body will be telling him that he shouldnt anymore. then lose weight, for every pound of fat i think its something like 2 miles or something of cappilaries that your body has to pump blood thru, so if hes heavy, the 20 % body mass reduction that they are sposed to recommend to obese individuals will have a huge impact also. cardiovascular exercise (with a doctors permission if the bp is really out of comtrol) also helps
to sum it up. pray, asperin, lower sodium intake (to 2000 mg per day ) lose weight (if hes heavy),stop smoking (if hes a smoker), and exercise all should help. so apparently one of our opinions wasnt worthless
He needs to go in and get treated.
There are lots of antihypertensives out there.
He needs to exercise, diet, low-salt, and keep hydrated.
As well as taking the pills as directed.
Do what the doctor tell him to do. Our opinions are worthless.
Talk to his doctor, maybe he needs medication or if he is on medication it may need adjusting.
Too serious to treat on your own.
See his doctor:
Stop smoking and drinking
Lose weight
Cut down on salt in his diet
Take medication
Practice deep relaxation techniques
He should definitely be under a doctor's care. Hypertension is high blood pressure, and should be viewed seriously. If he won't make an appointment to see his physician, you do it for him and go with him. The doctor will give him medication to regulate the fluctuating pressure, and give him advice to follow at home, such as diet, exercise, lifestyle habits, etc. If you care about your dad, get him to a doc as soon as possible...
He should be taking medicine for high blood pressure. If he ignores it he could have a stroke or a heart attack.
In cases of hypertension, fluctuations are risky, consult the treating doctor tell him the problem ,he will manage it by adding or changing some medicines.Counselling also helps.
he needs to see a doctor to see what's triggering the fluctuation in his blood pressure.
a blood test should be done to look at both sodium and cholesterol.
if sodium level is high -- he might be retaining too much water in his blood.
if cholesterol is high -- this might be blocking his arteries, making it harder for the heart to pump blood through narrowed vessels.
if he smokes, he should stop -- because lung problems can cause blood vessels to constrict.
there are other factors that can increase the blood pressure -- these are just the common ones.
