This is a disease caused by a virus and spread through mosquito bite. Since it is a viral disease, and like most viral diseases, it too does not have a specific treatment. The treatment therefore remains symptomatic - ie, you treat the symptoms like fever, hypotension, joint pains etc, but you do not have the means to treat the disease as there is no cure. The symptoms abate after 7 to 10 days. In severe and fulminant cases, death can occur rapidly with bleeding disorder, liver failure, circulatory failure etc. So far this disease was circumscribed to a forest named Chickugunya in India, but the disease has recently started spreading out much beyond the forest area where it was seen in monkeys and tree dwellers, and man was occassionally affected.
