If you had a hereditary genetic disorder, would you have kids? Why/why not?
I was wondering if you knew that you had a genetic disorder and had a 50/50 chance of passing it on to your offspring, would you still have a child or children? Why or why not? Please explain your answer. Also would you please answer if you would have children with someone who had a genetic disorder?
Thank you.
Answers:
it depends on the disorder. If it is life threatening.why take the chance.
I have a rare disorder called ectodermal dysplasia, so do all my siblings. My son was also born with this, however it is not life threatening (in fact we have noticably higher IQ's than the general population). You do look a bit different, and there are other small issues to contend with, but, it has made me a stronger person.
People tell me all the time why would you try and have another kid when you already have one who has this disorder.why put another kid through this...I answer then they wouldn't be going through it alone.
I was lucky to have my sisters, and my journey has made me a stronger more tolerant and accepting person.
Besides it is by the little differences that societies and cultures evolve.
who would want to be perfect?..not I
wow nice propaganda banzai 4..looking for that master race?
In my opinion, kids are an ego trip for the parents.
If there were a chance of my passing on a disease such as diabetes, I would not selfishly have children and run the risk of subjecting them to a lifetime of pain and suffering just to stroke my own ego.
no. because that means u would have special children and u would have to come up with alot of money 2 take care of them. it's time consuming.
no, you shouldn't. It's putting a child at undue risk of something, and allowing your genes to propogate right back into the gene pool.
That's irresponsible and selfish not only to a child, but to the entire human race and future generations. If you have a genetic disorder, do a service to the greater good and allow your gene line to end.
Adopt one of the millions of homeless starving babies already in the world instead of risking having a sick one. Do some good instead of risking doing some bad.
Edit: first poster is right on the money
If it was debilitating, no, it it was a minor annoyance, maybe.
Why bring something into the world on purpose, who couldn't survive?
If you can live with a decison like that, then don't get tested.
It would all depend on what the effects of the disorder are. If it is deadly , then no. If it was severely debilitating then no. I think that if you want them, then you should be able to have them. Not necessarily will they get it any way.
I have to say I really don't think I would. I just don't think it would be fair to the kid. Life is hard enough much less if you have issues like that. I know what it's like to want a child of your own. I have been trying for 6 yrs. with no luck. Adoption is a WONDERFUL thing. If I had the money I would adopt in a minute. There are SO many kids in this world that need good parents & lots of love!
This was my reason for deciding, many years ago, that I would -never- have children. I refuse to inflict my flawed genetic code on another person -- it would be a form of child abuse, in my opinion, to -knowingly- pass on a defect that will prevent that child from having a healthy life.
