has anyone experienced dbs surgery for parkinson's disease?

what i need, is someone who has had the surgery, let me know what goes on. is there a hospital stay, does it hurt, anything you can tell mr, I am reallly scared!

Well, I haven't had it, but I have worked as a doctor in neurosurgical units where the procedure is performed, have cared for the patients who have had DBS and observed the surgery.

It doesn't hurt at all. The skull is anaesthetised prior to the procedure, although you do have to wear a frame on your head after an CT scan so that the surgeon knows exactly where to go.

If you have PD sufficiently severely to warrant DBS it can give amazing results. Patients are almost universally extremely satisfied with the procedure, and it can have really dramatic effecs on quality of life.

If your neurologist or neurosurgeon has recommended it for you, it is definitely worth your while. It is always scary to be in hospital and to have surgery, but this particular operation has very good outcomes.
