I am actually beating cholesterol right now. I have lowered the LDL, increased the HDL and importantly decreased the triglycerids.

All that with 2 key changes to my life:
- low carb diet

Hi. Yes, there are alternatives and some are mentioned by others here. I guess the first question is why for you? Is it the expense? Possible side effects? Actual side effects? Interest in alternatives?

Increasing the amount of dietary fiber in the diet has been shown time and time again in clinical trials to help lower cholesterol (it can lower the bad and in many instances raise the good cholesterol). According to the National Institutes of Health's National Cholesterol Education Program dietary changes are supposed to be the FIRST line of treatment for elevated cholesterol. They recommend adding dietary fiber and plant sterols that mimic cholesterol in the body to get it down first. I NEVER see this happen in the hospital with the doctors I works with. I've only had one of them refer a patient to me but only after the patient couldn't tolerate the statin drugs. The typical fiber that can be bought at Walmart is basically potty powder and won't do much for cholesterol.

I hope this helps a little. Jeff the nurse in Nashville

This occurs in 2 out of 3 people. The 3rd one just having no change. Was also told to stop eating so much white bread.bloat went down.
