What are the odds of me getting multiple sclerosis if my dad has it?

Many people think I should be tested, but I am scared. I have seen what my dad has had to go through & I would rather not know if I have it right now. Should I get tested for MS? It runs in his side of the family , & he is the only guy with it. My cousin is in a wheel chair because of it , and quite frequently forgets things. My dad has bad vision problems & often is very weak, & when he gets sick he takes twice as long to recover. He has had 3 strokes from it as well. He often looses feeling in his left side as well. I loose feeling in my left side sometimes too & often stumble & have vision problems. Do you think that I could have MS too?

Answers:
you should go on line to the MS society, and they can send you info on this, Ive been diagnoised as probable MS, and still doing test, I have the numbness, tingling, and alot of Pain.. but, Im still not on any medciation as of yet, I feel bad for your dad and know what he is going through.. they will most likely just do an MRI to see if you have any lesions. I also here that a child with someone with MS only has about a 10% chance of getting it..but if it bothers you discuss it with your family and go get it checked out I wish you the best

I would say definitely see a doctor, however just because a relative has MS doesn't mean you will have it. My mother has MS and I do not. Good luck to you!
I have MS also. I did not think it was herditary. But the symptoms ur expressing I would see a doc and tell him/her ur sypmtoms and concerns. I wish you well and sympathize wholeheartedly.
MS is not hereditary. But it is genetic and your chances of having the disease doubles. My mom had MS and I was diagnosed 2 months ago.
