Everyone carries the virus for shingles. It is the chicken pox virus that has been dormant for years, it comes back in the form of herpes zoster i.e. shingles. Some people get it on their torso i.e. stomach, chest and back. Some get it on their face and around the eye. When associated with the eye/face the 6th or 7th facial nerve can be effected causing excruciating pain, it is also very painfull on the torso. I hope that your father is on some type of steroidal treatment such as acyclovir and a narcotic pain med. Not to scare you shigles can lead to death, I am an ophthalmic assistant and we actually had a patient commit suicide because the pain was so bad. The pain has also been known to cause heart attacks if severe enough.

go to a derm & get some cream or u can try blue star ointment.
He should see a doctor, if he hasn't already. Witch hazel is something that is used by Mennonites/Amish for many skin ailments.
Depends what stage it is in. If the visible pimples are just about gone, you can rub where the pain is. There is nerve damage there. Be sure to wash your hands. Shingles can spread chicken pox through contact. No joke.
Shingles is a viral infection like chicken pox that stays dormant at the root of nerves (most often thoracic). The vesicles appear along the nerve path. It can be recurrent and is very very painful. It can occur along with other illnesses when his resistance is low. Take him to see a doctor and make sure he is well otherwise. He needs pain medication and, if caught soon enough, can find some lessening of the episode with anti-viral medication.

Good luck to him.
His doctor may be able to reduce the duration and extent of his shingles. Also, there are a couple of medicines (Lyrica, for one) that is indicated for shingles pain.
