3 Year old with mild CP. Growing pains or muscle pains due to CP?

My son has mild CP (right side hemi) and PVL. Range of motion is normal and we have only mild tightness on fast stretches (sorry don't know the term). Some nights he wakes up saying his ankle hurts. Does CP hurt? Can this just be growing pains or is he experiencing something more painful? Should we contact our ped?

Answers:
I've treated a few patients with CP. CP does not progress, so he could be having muscle spasms due to exercise, or if his gait (walking pattern) is altered due to CP, he could have some bone alignment issues in his feet, knees or hips. I would look into seeing a good chiropractor. If you are in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro, e-mail me at fitmedic2001@yahoo.com

Get an Occupational Therapist to begin providing therapy for CP. Therapy is painful but will increase range of motion and alleviate future motor loss. I believe all states are required by law to provide "early intervention" for pre-school aged kids.. the funding is attached to the total budget for educational programs, and states must provide this service in order to be eligible for national funds. Investigate, call your local school district and find out who is doing early intervention work for your district and sign up. I believe benefits will continue until age 21.
do not give up! what one doctor doesn't know another does. This is your child. Do whatever you can to solve the problem.
