stroke question?

Hi,

I was wondering if strokes can be caused by an injury to nose or face. If someone punched someone in the face and caused a broken nose or any damage, could that possibly cause a stroke later in time?

Answers:
Probably not, but that doesn't mean you will not have a stroke because of other risk factors like smoking, high choelestrol, over weight or lack of exercise.

ETA: In light of newly added information, it sounds like your friend has a serious head injury and needs to be seen in the Emergency Room as soon as possible.

it wouldn't be the broken nose per se, but the event that caused the broken nose could also have caused injury to the brain, which could possibly lead to an increased chance of a stroke.
Sounds like someone is fishing for a law suit.
Just about anything is possible where the brain is concerned. A stroke is the result of a broken blood vessel in the brain, and the root cause can vary - from weakened blood vessels, to high blood pressure (or a combination of the two), to a cranial impact such as a punch to the head.

It can cause a stroke but unlikely to cause one that happens later. Typically there would be other causes. There are several factors in a stroke occuring and that could or couldn't be one. It would be VERY difficult to conclude it had.
strokes, or CVA's (cerebrovascular accident), happens when a blood clot clocks a vein and part of the brain doesn't get the oxygen it needs to survive. Because our brain cells can't regenerate, typically a person who suffers a CVA will lose part or all of the function that the injured part of the brain used to control.
When you say "later" I assume you mean in years, in which case I can say, no, there's little chance A kick in the face will give you a stroke ten years from now. strokes happen by chance, and you can't worry about it, unless you have high blood pressure. The vasoconstriction makes it easier for clots to form when you have HBP. If you have a clotting disease, like Factor V Leiden, you are also at a higher risk for stroke. These are reasons to worry about having a stroke, but a broken nose probably isn't. You can always get a CT scan or and MRI if you're REALLY worried about it!
stroke is caused by blockage of blood vessels in the brain resulting in a lack of blood supply and brain cells die off. when certain parts of the brain cells dies, different symptoms is observed like half paralysis, blurred vision, blurred speech, etc in different people. stroke can also be caused by dislocation of neck bone pressing on the nerve and half paralysis from neck down is observed. depends on many causes. an injury to nose or face is possible but not always the case.
If it caused a clot that somehow dislodged later and caused a blockage, then yes. That's what strokes are all about; a disturbance in bloodflow caused by the dislodging and subsequent re-lodging of a clot.

If yours is not just an objective for instance question; if you were the recipient of such a punch and are experiencing things that lead you to believe that you are in danger of a stroke stemming from that punch, then as a stroke survivor myself I would advise you to see a neurologist immediately and get checked out. Better to find it before it happens than to become a heartwarming rehab story.
Strokes are caused by blood bleads in the brain. Hitting someone in the face can cause other kinds of dammage, but one hit usualy is not enough unless you are a pro boxer or martal artist. There are better ways of settling arguments.

I don't think this could ever be caused by a punch to the face.
I will have to disagree with most of the answerer's - While the broken nose itself will not cause a stoke directly, it can release blood clots into the blood stream. These clots can cause a stroke by blocking a blood vessel in the brain (or in the heart or lung).

I will concede that this is very unlikely, but any injury can cause a clot. Most are benign, but there is a possibility.

" STROKE" is a descriptive term that mean (sudden)
If a blood clot is formed in the brain due to direct hit in the nose or face and if vital function of the brain is affected, then not only stroke but sudden death occurs. Please see the news report given below.
April 6, 2005 Becky Zerlentes, 34, died on Sunday, April 3 in what was to be her last boxing match before retirement. The match, a Colorado State Golden Gloves bout, was held in Denver on April 2. Her opponent for the senior women's title in that match was Heather Schmitz, 32.
Zerlentes received a knockout punch in the third round by a straight blow to her left temple. She received immediate attention from ringside physicians, but never regained consciousness, even after being admitted to Denver General Hospital for emergency surgery on Saturday night. She expired on Sunday due to blunt-force trauma injuries received to the head, resulting in a blood clot on the brain.
