Toddler w/ broken femur, appropriate follow up care by Dr.- At what intervals were you given x-rays? HELP!?

My 2.5 yr old daughter broker her femur on 8-7. She was placed in a full body cast. At her 4 week appt. it was discovered that her leg, hip and knee are seriously out of alignment from improper casting. I was told that all breaks in a child need to be X-rayed at 1 week post casting to make sure the alignment is correct and the break is stable. WE WERE NEVER SEEN UNITL 4 WEEKS LATER! Now my daughter is facing a major surgery with a new specialist (pediatric ortho) and will need to have her leg re-broken and reset, including pins and metal plates! Furthermore, she will need an additional surgery to remove the hardware in 6 months! The ER at our Hospital referred the 1st ortho doc to handle the case, even though he was not a pediatric ortho. I asked if we should be trransfered to a childrens hospital upon arrival and they said they could easily handle this. This is a heart wrenching mess and my daghter is really suffering. Have any of you had any experience with this? HELP!

Answers:
You must take the X-rays that are with you along with your child to a different ortho doctor for a second opinion, before you get the child subjected to a major surgery like this one. The doctor must be well qualified in ortho or paediatric ortho .

hmmmm....!!
Sorry to hear about your daughter. How did she break her femur, l. After the accident..did you follow up with your own Pediatrician? Was he not called by the ER Physician? ( this was seen in a Hosp ED right?) in a Rual..Metro area? Young Kids are pretty flexible..but the fact of a femur fracture is pretty major.largest single bone in the body. I'm not speaking one way or another against the local Hosp. But i would have thought that..this case would have been sent to a Childrens Hospital...just based on what few things are printed here.
It's not always necessary to remove the hardware. Maybe they would in her case, because she still has lots of growing to do. I am full of metal; ( 48 yrs ) and I refused to get it removed, as long as it's not bothering me.

You need to get a very good attorney and keep very detailed notes..you have a huge lawsuit with that first doctor and hospital !

Insist on the proper pain meds for your daughter. Bone surgery is one of the most painful kinds of surgeries. My heart attack did not hurt as bad as my ankle surgeries !
