I took a blood test and my ast score was 51 and my alt score was 68 what does this mean?
Answers:
ast= aspartate transferase an enzyme found in the liver
alt= alanine transferase also found in the liver
blood glucose= level of circulating sugar , if it is low it indicates SEVERE liver disease, therefore it has something to do with the liver ,not like what a previous poster stated.
a fasting level is expected to be between 60 - 90 mg%
but actually a level of 121 is acceptable and means
you might have IMPAIRED GLUCOSE TOLERANCE
which is a step down from frank diabetes .
however if you WERE NOT FASTING the glucose level
is normal ,especially if within 2 hours from a meal.
regarding the liver enzymes they appear high normal to me,
as the levels fluctuate even in normal people due to the various
factors affecting the levels. the accepted upper level for them
both(approximation) is in 20-40 range .
this looks to me like a pre operation workup , if so i dont think you need to worry about the enzyme levels , the glucose level
is somewhat significant if you were FASTING when they took the sample.
if there is suspicion of viral hepatitis , adding an ultrasound
of the liver is cheap and provides valuable information about the
STRUCTURE of the liver which is a good sign of the liver condition.
anyway you could do some research yourself , just
search for (liver function test ) or ( alanine transferase) in
yahoo or google search.
also search for (glucose tolerance) to give info about the glucose level.
These are liver function tests. They are a bit elevated but not necessarily life threatening. Liver function tests can become elevated when you are on a lot of medicines, especially cholesterol meds. Your sugar is high too..it should be below 100 when you are fasting. Were you fasting? If not that still has nothing to do with your LFT's
Duh! While you were at the doctor's office getting these results, why didn't you ask him?
you have aids
Your tests are just a little higher than the normal. A normal ast and alt is 10--50 and glucose is 65--99. If you take the tests again the levels will be different, because these liver function levels are constantly changing, but not a whole lot.
