I've had dilated cardiomyopathy since 1999. It depends alot on his ejection faction, which means how much the heart muscle actually squeezes. If you father takes his meds the way the Doc's recommend & he doesn't lay around he could live a long life. The biggest problem is alot of folks don't stay active. Your father should start walking some each day & gradually increase his distance. Eat right & lose weight, the less you have to carry around the easy it is on you. I was like your Father overweight & inactive, now my diet & exercise is important. My ejection faction was 18 now it is 50 my weight is under control & I now I eat a low calorie& low fat diet. Basic rule of thumb 10 calories for every pound & exercise & he will lose weight. All the folks I know who layed around & felt sorry for themselves with this dease lived less than 2 years. I know he tires easly but as he builds up his stamia & loses weight he will feel better.
Let him do gradual exercise and increase the pace of brisk walking as soon as his stamina is increased.
