I am quite often tired and lethargic during the day - what foods in particular would benefit me and why?

Cheers!

PROTEIN PROTEIN PROTEIN, FRUITS OH AND WATER

complex carbohydrates - rice, potatos (not chips), bread etc give you long lasting energy avoid sugary things as you will get a sugar low later on.

Or 4 cans of red bull usually does it for me. (or coffee i suppose)
Fruit. It contains natural sugars and actual vitamins. Far better than a can of soda.
You need foods that release energy slowly - that is also foods that are low GI and leaving you feel fuller for longer.

Things like porridge and jacket potatoes are good.
Maybe a little iron from red meat or spinach etc. Get those red blood cells going. Also have porridge for breakfast for slow-release energy through the day. Fruit juice for a quick energy fix, bananas to relieve physical tiredness as they are full of carbohydrate, nuts and seeds for natural fats for energy, wholegrain cereals to raise metabolism.
Not sure if it helps or not, but half way through the day I drink a glass of milk and eat a 1/4 cup of nuts. For some reason I get another bolt of energy, but could just be psycological with me too. Try a banana, apple, or other types of fruits / veggies. I heard they are good too, but I don't do fruits/veg's so I don't know first hand.

I also drink lots of water to keep me from sitting to long (lol) and I move around a lot whether I remain in my seat or standing up. I try to never sit too still for too long.
Drink Berroca, that will get your balls rolling!
i felt the same then i started taking multivitamin with iron tablets and i'm better now.apparantly i was lacking iron in my blood..that was making me tired.

I used to finish work and go to sleep when i got home i was so tired!
Protein.I feel that way if I don't have it!
Before you start eating food to get your energy, make sure that you are getting enough sleep at night, that can be the main cause of slowness during the day, 8-9 hours are recomended.
bananas are good in the morning they have potassium in them and give you a slow release of energy throughout the day
Bananas! Oranges! Apples! Boost Bars!
Hi Lost, This is little.lost.
I would say a drink called lift off which has taurine and guarana (natural caffine) in it, if you want i can tell you more.
read tips on healthier eating and dietary needs that will help you on this site
Fruits and vegetables. They're always good for you.
Quite a lot by the sounds of it. Why? because you've lost all your bloody energy and food gives you that and I suspect dieting has something to do with this. YES?.eat plenty of fruit and eat fish in all form GOOD LUCK.
Hi Lost, I was similar to you ie. being lethargic etc I went to the doctor and found out I had a thyroid problem, on a course of treatment now and feel much better.
make sure you are getting enough vitimins and taking enough exercise..a lack of these can make you feel tired!
Try a cleansing diet! I did and lost 10.5 pounds and 17 inches in only 9 days. I was very happy with the results and continued on the program and lost 25 pounds in 5 weeks. This is the fastest I have ever lost with other diets like Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, Medifast, Slimfast etc…. Cleansing works by removing toxins from your body. You get toxins from your food (pesticides, preservatives, food additives, colorings) water, chemicals, pollution, medications, alcohol, hormones that the animals you eat were fed etc….YUCK! The toxins get coated with fat and remain in your body. To remove the fat, you have to remove the toxins. This system worked for me, maybe it can work for you too. You can check out the website or call this toll free number 1-877-587-4647 for more info. The program is not cheap, but it is worth every penny since it works and keeps you motivated. Good luck!
Hi get some stuff called 'hot cans'

tinned food with a ring pull, which has a self heating thing in the bottom, then when you get hungery you don't have to move to far to get a hot meal
Perhaps you should investigate the underlying cause of feeling tired and lethargic.

If you are employed in a physically demanding such as coal miner or something then you need to consume high energy foods to give you the energy you need, you would do well to get energy from protein rich foods.

You could be anaemic, if this is the case then you need iron, and to absorb iron you also need vitamin C, Iron is found in green vegetables, Popeye always went for spinach as it contains huge amounts of iron, this is true however our bodys cannot access the iron in spinach! Try cabbage. Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons, limes, also blackcurrants and strawberries.

This one might appear a bit obvious but do you get enough sleep and also is that sleep good un-interrupted sleep? If you are over weight then you may suffer from sleep apnea, you probably won't be aware of it but during the night you may wake-up many times, breaking your sleep patterns and preventing you from getting the deep sleep your body needs.

Hope this helps.
Go and see your Doctor, I had similar symptoms and went to the Doctors, it turns out I was diabetic, now I am back to feeling like my old self. I'm not saying you are a diabetic, but see the Doctor for advice.
