What can I do to get over my very strong fear of the dentist?

Is it safe to be put to sleep for each visit?

Answers:
The first thing to remember is that your dentist did not go into the profession so that he could torture people all day long. Most doctors and dentists want to help people feel better and take pain away. But they have to help you by fixing the area which is hurting, which means touching the area which is hurting. Its like if you have a broken bone that needs to be set, it will hurt like crazy because they have to touch the place where it hurts the most. Being up front with your dentist about any fears will help him know to be extra gentle and explain everything to you very clearly.
i don't recommend being put to sleep any more than is absolutely necessary, but if that is the only way you can handle it, well, ask your dentist about it; if they are already doing that for you then it must be ok. the best thing to do? take super great care of your teeth so you don't have to have much work done when you go in, ever.
I was never afraid of the dentist, or going to his office; not even when I needed to get a cavity filled or a tooth removed.
Start practicing this

When he puts his hand in your mouth bite it

Then fear shall shift to him
What initially caused the fear of going to the dentist? Did you have a bad experience when you were younger? I went to the same dentist for years but had a bad experience when I was in junior high. Didn't go again until I was a senior in high school and had chipped a tooth - but I found a new dentist and they were great and I've been going to them for 17 years now with no problem. Please don't let your fear keep you from going and I really don't think it's necessary to be put out for each visit. You just need to find an understanding, caring practice who will explain everything that needs to be done to you and are very reassuring.
u just have to face your fear and go, no it's not safe to be put to sleep every time, shots they give to numb u will be enough, they r not as bad as u think , it's just a quick pinch and it really is not horrible pain , like i said just a quick pinch
I feel for you. I fear the man in the white smock, too. What you can do is take care of your teeth so you don't have to go as often, but if you really need to have your teeth taken care of, you can find a dentist who uses total anesthesia. If you're a little uncomfortable with the idea, you can do a little research on the pros and cons of sleep dentistry, and then make your decision.
It would be good to just ask the dentist for a valium before u go for your appt.He will just give u one for the visit.I dont like the to strong going to sleep one,Its safe but uness.
I too will cancel every appointment IF I don't take a xanax a couple hours prior to my appointment. I've come up with some really creative excuses...just ask my dentist!!

I've gone as far as telling them that a big oak tree fell across my driveway and I was sorry that I wouldn't be able to make it but I had to chain saw my way out. !

Many others that would crack you up!

Be honest with your dentist and tell him that you'll just need something to calm you. He can give you an RX to take prior to your appointments.
Definitely helps!!
