What are the best methods for treating tooth infections?
Hi all!
My boyfriend's having a major root-canal-gone-wrong infection treated by his dentist, with antibiotics & a good pain med. He is hurting big time.
We're wondering, what else can help him deal with it at home? He's in great pain even with the pain meds.is there a home remedy, best reclining position , tips, anything at all else to help him deal with this? General net search is not much assistance on this-I'm trying :)
Thanks so much for any ideas you might have-much appreciated.

Nobody asnwered about the reclining position yet, so here you go.
If someone has an abscess and I have just started a root canal or if they are going on antibiotics for a few days before I remove the tooth, I tell them to sleep on an extra pillow to elevate their head. If that doesn't work, they can move to a recliner or the sofa so they can keep their head really elevated. This will minimize the blood flow to the area and therefore minimize the throbbing and pain.
The best way to get him treated is to go to the ER, get pain meds and antibiotics by IV.
Those will work the fastest at clearing up both the infection and the pain.
He needs to keep his head elevated, like in a recliner.
ice to the jaw
antiinflammatories such as motrin, on an alternating basis with the pain meds
when i had an absess tooth my boyfriend had me rub alchohol (not rubbing alchohol but acual drinking alchohol..vodka is good) all over the area where it hurt. it numbs it pretty well. it was a great relief for me maybe it will help him.. good luck.
If he is in that much pain, I would see another dentist!!
MY dentist gives antibiotics BEFORE the root canal..no infection possible!
Call the denist.regardless of the time.tell them the antibiotics are not working and the pain meds aren't helping..He will need to be on the antibiotic about 24 hrs. before things get better, or need a different one, as that does happen sometimes..sometimes Ibruprofen (Motrin,Advil) work better than Vicoden with tooth pain. But if he tries that make sure he eats something with it or drinks milk, so your stomach doesn't get torn up. No more than 600mg every 4-6 hrs. The denist will not be able to work on tooth until the infection improves.I had that happen once to me.and the root canal was Overfilled! Not fun.he might have to have that checked out/relooked at..good luck!
Go where you can buy the her comfrey. Make a tea with it but only hold it inside the mouth the spit it out.
I would call the dentist's office and say that the pain meds are not working and that you need immediate attention. If you get no results call the medical society and see what they suggest that you do. You could go to the emergency room at the hospital as they have dental areas in the hospital. If it is a top tooth it could have gone into the sinus cavity and if it is a lower tooth it could have affected the nerve in the jaw. No one needs to suffer with tooth pain go for help.
O.K my husband ones put the hair blow dryer so wat close to his cheak;the heat mayit a little better, and then I gave him some liquid motrin usually it for kids but I fine it very good for adults too,it better if you take it before going to bed,at least you'll have some hours of sleep before it wares down. But the best thing it's antibiotics.
