What do you do when you need dental work done but have no insurance?

I have a really good friend who needs his wisdom tooth pulled. Unfortunately he has no insurance and it is $700 to get it pulled. He doesn't have a lot of money so he doesn't know what to do, after he pays his bills he isn't left with much else. Does anyone have any suggestions.safe suggestions?

Answers:
Yes, Have him check with the Department of Family and Children Services. If that does not work then search for a Medical School that provides dental work. They do it at a DEEP Discount. Also, he can probrably get financing for it.

He needs to talk to the dentist and work out a payment plan. If his dentist wont do payments he needs to find a dentist that will.
If you contact a dental college, they have free services that they do. My friend is in dental college right now and she does this.
My dentist allows me to make payments. I don't know if this is standard procedure or not.
Some dentists will let you pay by the month. He should ask if there's a payment plan.
all he has to do is apply for medicaid doll they never turn anyone down
700 bucks, your kiddin'..what a rip off..my dentist wouldn't charge half that. first thing , find another dentist..
What state does your friend live in? I can try to locate some dental funds for him.
I had to pay the bill. He may be able to pay it off little by little and then have them pulled.
just save or borrow from someone,i went through toothache for two years b4 i had my teeth pulled.Good luck
He should see about a payment plan or maybe he could inquire at the nearest dental school to get a break on the cost of the work to be done.
The Shands Hospital has a program to treat lower income, by teaching interns.
YES!
most health departments have a dentist that does dental work on a 'sliding scale' which basically means he pays whatever he can afford.

if the health department in your county don't have one they should be able to direct you to some help
There is a dental credit program called "Care Credit" it worked for me and allowed me to receive 3500 in medical related only credit and I had crummy credit at the time. go to google and put in care credit. It should be enough and the payments are very low. So good luck to ya !
Call around to dentists, or the dental school if you have one nearby. I think you will be surprised at the differences in price.
try a university dental school or a dentist with a payment plan. please make sure that the dentist is legit and that all the instruments are autoclaved.
Use someone elses insurance.
Sometimes there are programs where they have a dentist who does work at no cost or almost no cost for people in circumstances like you describe. Talk with a church in town or your local goodwill store. If no such program exists, he might try checking with local dentists who might be willing to take a very small monthly payment.
I had to use this..Most dentist are using it. No interest if you can pay it off in a year..
see if the dentist will work out a payment plan for him. some do some don't
When it gets so bad he goes to the hospital , then he will finally have to get it done. If it were me I'd tell my bill receiver's to kiss my (never mind). But He will just get worse, plus they are probally now infected, and that infection is spread and spreading throughout his body and making him weaker and weaker, and sicker and sicker, need I go on. You could loan him the money maybe..........
He could try going to a dental hosppital where they train dentists. I had some dental work done for free this way, and it is always supervised by qualified personelle.

I went to mexico to have a tooth pulled. I paid $35. I don't recommend doing what I did though. I knew the dentist that pulled my tooth. You can't always trust dr's or dentists down in mexico because some are not licensed to practice but somehow they do. Hopefully you can find a clinic that will let him make payments. Goodluck!
Have your friend contact the local dental school, they offer reduced rates for dental work. They are well monitored by instructors and it help you and the student. It may take a bit longer than the average Dentist but for the discount rate who could complain?
Good luck
