Has anyone had a dry socket from getting their wisdom teeth pulled? Explain.?
Answers:
Termed localised osteitis and is a low grade infection of the bone lining the empty tooth socket . Why the prexisting blood clot degenerates and ceases to seal the open wound is not known ,but the effect is severe and unrelieved pain . Dental treatment consists of packing the socket with gauze iodoform strip impregnated with eugenol (oil of cloves ) . This will give almost immediate relief and the socket will begin to heal normally .
Yes if you knock the blood clot out or get food in the hole there is pain like you cannot describe. The surgeon can pack the hole with a clove tasting product that blocks the air and numbs the area. Makes it feel so much better.
I didn't when I had mine out, but my husband did. The pain was unbearable and just wouldn't go away. He went back to the dentist who packed the hole full of cotton and a foul-smelling substance that made him smell like beef jerky for days.
Skeeter is right. I had dry sockets on two wisdom teeth. While the pain wasn't blinding it was enough that I could not do my job. I went back to the dentist, he packed them with some horrible tasting stuff (nastier than eating ashes outta the ashtray) but it did its job. Immediate pain relief and the hole where the tooth came out was protected from food particles and protected it from infection.
