Alex: If I am assisting a dentist working on a patient with AIDS?
can I get Aids? Has there been any cases of this happening?
Answers:
As long as your using universal precautions (gloves, mask, eye protection) the chances are extremely small. HIV is spread through blood transfusions, sexual contact and sharing needles.
If you were to poke yourself with the contaminated needle, the chances are 1 in 400 that you would become HIV +. So in short, treat this patient as you would any other. No cases of this have happened with dental assistants without some type of accidend (needle stick, contaminated scalpel blade cut, etc) But from the standard amount of patient contact such as suctioning and rinsing, no it has not occoured.
There is no need to double glove. That's a sign of lack of education, nothing else. Universal precautions means UNIVERSAL. Each and every patient is treated like they are infectious.
only if you get in contact with blood, but if with saliva than you got no chances.
Is Alex the only one allowed to answer this question?
Not likely.less than one in a million(during the appointment that is!)
No
You could. Make sure to wear gloves. Who is this Alex you're talking about? He better not be MY Alex!! lol
if you are working in someones mouth you should be wearing gloves. aids is contracted through blood contact..like if you have an open sore/cut on you and it comes in contact with their blood then..yes it is possible. if you are wearing gloves then no.
the chance is very low if you have a cut on your hand were 2 pairs of gloves but i wouldn`t worry about it
I would just becareful
you may contact it AIDS [chances are remote but you can].You do need to take adequate precautions.double gloves, eye protection and surgical gown over your normal clinical wear.BE CAREFUL WITH NEEDLES after local anesthesia is given to patients.Commonest cause of health personnel getting infected. make sure it is capped at all times if not in use.
