o wow..
try slipping a breath strip in his mouth before each conversation...
well unless he is going to go to the dentist and get checked out, your not going to be able to do nothing. You could offer the person gum. Have it in your pocket at all times.
You are indeed courageous to tell him that. I have very sensitive nose so i smell bad breath easily. But i find it hard to tell the other persons. only thing i do is i keep a safe distance. But i accept that on some days when you are feeling well or if you have not talk the whole day and feel thirsty, you can have bad breath. That's goes for me too. I may tell if it is a persistent problem and if i am close to that person. since he already knew about it yet couldn't be bothered, tell me you will keep a safe distance until he resolves the problem. You can cover your nose or face another direction when he talks. That being said, others may not face the same problems that you did with him cos their nose may not be that sensitive. I used to have a friend with such problem but no one around her seem to have that problem except me so i reckon my nose is especially sensitive.
Bad breath is caused by decay and\or infection going on somewhere in the mouth, throat, or lungs. It can be caused by eating something with a strong odor such as garlic or onions, but that would be a temporary smell.

Your friend may not have been taught about oral hygiene or his family may be too poor to see a dentist on a regular basis.

He may also have infected tonsils or something that a doctor needs to assess.

Sit your friend down and express your concerns as a friend. Make sure they understand that you have no wish to overstep your friendship, but you are concerned. Offer to help them find a way to receive treatment if it's a question of finances.

If you don't want to go that route, offer them a breathe mint when you are with them.
I could relate I had the same problem at one time only with an X-boyfriend after he would not listen. I offered him breath mints, or everything I thought would help Then when he turned it down I let him have it !! I told him straight up with no sugar coating * because it is a serious matter and everybody is probably all in his face laughing at at him in his face and talking about him behind his back!! Only people who cares will comfort an irritating situation like this .GOOD LUCK and be prepare for the fight because it will be hard cause he will be hurt!! P.S. Assist him in making an dental appointment the problem is certainly curable!!
You're really a good friend for at least telling him about the problem. Maybe he won't listen because he is emabarrased to admit his problem , he's in denial or he just thinks its not that big of a deal. Well it is! Halitosis can be a sign of another medical problem within the body. He should really have it checked out. Encourage him to at least learn what it is , so he can make decisions on treatment because there is treatment for bad breath. You and your friend should gain knowledge on what causes bad breath and treatments for it.
He's your friend I don't think by you staying away from him and he ignoring the problem is going to do any good. Encourage him to listen, take the time and tackle this problem , it wouldn't hurt . There's a nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain if his halitosis is treated.
