Is it normal to get retainers before braces?

My childs' dentist suggested retainers for her overbite. If that doesnt work , braces may be in order. She is 9 & still has baby teeth

Answers:
The retainers are usually successful in moving the teeth. Retainersare much more practical for young children and involve alot less pain, Two of my children had retainers ad never needed braces. Their teeth looked beautiful after about 2 years of the retainer use. I personally prefer them to braces. Many times especially with young children they can't clean their mouths properly with braces and then braces cause cavities because of the plack build up around the braces. With the retainers they can remove them and clean their own teeth just fine. I think, it is a much better alternative to braces.

I'm sure the orthodontist knows what they are doing.
No. Not the same order my daughter went through
Retainers are for holding teeth in place or for minor tooth movement. My daughter at 7 had a arch expander to widen the arch because she had a cross bite an couldn't close her mouth.
It worked great, she is 12 and it looks like she won't need braces.
Only problem was second day at school, she put her retainer in a napkin at lunch and through it out. Thank God for Mr. Joe our school custodian (and small school) he rifled thru the lunch garbage and found it.
yeah. many of the people that i know got retainers before they got their braces on.
The retainers will help her baby teeth fall out and it will also make room for more teeth my retainers are because I need more space in my mouth and also because I have about six overbites, the retainer will do what they can and then the braces will do the rest if necessery. Hope this information works. By the way I am nin years old.
