Should I be concerned about abnormal test results from my surgeon?

Recently, a surgeon removed what he thought was a cyst from my jaw. He told me that he would not call with the results/set up an appointment for at least a month unless there was a problem. He even joked that the longer you don't hear from me, the better because it means the pathologist has put your report on the bottom of his pile. He also said we could skip the follow up appointment because I'm a student with no insurance. Well his office called yesterday (only 1 week after the surgery) to tell me that my pathology results are in and the surgeon needs me to come in to discuss them with him. The WORST part is he is away on 'family emergency' for a week, so I won't get to meet with him until next week. This is rediculous, I'm scared and now I have to wait an entire week to speak with him? Would you be concerned...?

Answers:
FIRST OF ALL CALM DOWN.THE FACT THE DR WANTS TO SEE YOU DOES NOT MEAN THE WORST.
IF YOUR DR THOUGHT IT LIFE THREATNING HE WOULD HAVE CALLED AND TALKED ON PHONE .IT WILL BE FINE.KEEP YOU IN MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS.
yes
abnormal means exactly that. not normal. this does NOT mean your goign to die. this simply means something could have gone wrong with the test, they could have accidentally baked the tissue sample etc etc. no way to know till you talk to him. but consider this, if he was confident enough to go on vaction...you should be confident that your going to be there to see him at the end of that vacation.
ALWAYS get as much information as possible from your doctor on anything he talks about (i mean it's your body! your not going to get another one any time soon!) but don't freak out and go to some quak or use unproven off the wall 'medicine' though. remember, it's not part of main stream medicine because it wasn't proven to work. if it HAD proven to work it would have been like the story of asprin. willow bark soup.tested, shown it works, they find the ingredient that does it and tada we now have safe, concentrated, tested, purified and effective asprin.
instead of willow bark soup that could be lethal because who knew how much asprin was actually in it? how fast it would work? and how many OTHER things got into it!

trust your doctor. if he wants to see you again, see um. if he says your ok, then cautiously trust that. if he gives you a pescription, take it. remember he studied for years to get where he is and had to memories names and words and therapies with names to long to fit in the normal dictionary.

I'm guessing he is generally smart and knows his thing.
