Hey! I have had braces for over a year now. Most of the time, they are metal brackets. They glue on all the brackets and then pop a wire on them. It hurts quite a bit. Before you go, ask your parents to give you tylonal or some kind of pain relaver. It will be hard for you to eat for the first week or two, but try to eat super soft foods and soups (this was really hard for me). Even grapes will feel hard to you when you first get braces! Brush and floss your teeth often as well. Your dentist might reccomend a Water Pick, which is suposingly better than flossing. Also, when you get your braces tightened, it hurts a little. The skin on the inside of your cheeks might get tough from the braces rubbing against it. Good luck!
Braces are typically metallic, tho' they have clear plastic-like kinds as well. the back teeth have "bands" on them and the others have "brackets" which are what can be clear. Usually these are all tied (or Ligated as we say!) together w/ a wire that provides the slow, small force to move the teeth. so people WILL see that metal bit there, but no biggie.

They aren't painful so much as irritating. it's like falling and bruising your knee and being sore afterward. Ibuprofen is your friend! try motrin, advil, etc.

Here's a tip: if you have ANY questions at all about any treatment you get from doctors or dentists or whatever, ASK THEM! it's their JOB to tell you what's going on - this is call "informed consent."
I dont' mind answering the question, cuz I feel bad...but ther'es NO EXCUSE for patients to be so anxious about routine work when some guy is out there taking your money or your parents' money or your parents' insurance company's money and then leaving you in the dark and not taking 5 minutees to explain the process!
Don't accept anything less than full disclosure!
good luck!
Well, It depends on the Orthadontist. Somtimes they use a lot of numbing, and somtimes they dont.Overall, they dont really hurt that much. Maybe a little pain after the first night.but thats all. make sure to brush your teeth all the time because it gets stuck in your braces and its absolutly discusting!! ~cookiedough~ hope this helped
u can do nothing. they kinda hurt when u get them on and when they get tightened
its fine. they are mtal. they hurt for the first 24 hrs and after that u dont notice them at all! eat soft foods, and not alot of sticky or hard foods either brushing is a little harder but ur dentist will show u how by angling ur brush. dont worry and just think of the teeth u will have later!
Braces are metal actually. They will glue metal brackets on your teeth, put a wire through them, tighten it, then put rubber bands around them (which give braces their color)
When they put them on, it'll feel a little uncomfortable. Make sure you take Ibuprofen or Tyonol 30 minutes before your appointment, it'll make them feel a lot better.

After getting them on (which takes approx. 30 minutes) and with Tyonol, you probably won't feel much pain. It will feel as if someone is pulling on your teeth, just a tightness. Your bite will feel weird, but after a week or sooner, you'll be able to bite down correctly again. You'll also have a metallic taste in your mouth, and it will feel weird to smile, but that's fine!

After a week, your teeth won't hurt anymore, and the braces will feel as if they are literally part of your teeth/mouth.

The ortho. will tell you not to drink soda probably, but don't panic! You can drink soda, but you must brush your teeth soon afterwards. If you don't have a brush with you, swish your mouth around with water.
