Does rinsing with calcium rich water make sense?
I rinse my teeth with Evian because evian has a reletivly high calcium concentration (for bottled water anyway), Will this strenghten my enamal, Or is this just a waste of money.
P.S: Calcium not Flouride. It annoys me when I ask this question at other places and for some reason they start talking on and on about flouride. I know about flouride. tell me about calcium.
Answers:
Calcium is important inside of your body, it provides the structure that your teeth sit in, called the alveolar bone. Drinking and absorbing the calcium will help you keep your teeth in your bone sockets, but will do nothing for your enamel. Your enamel was created one time, when you were just a kid, there is no way to get more of it, just strengthen it with fluoride. That's why everyone wants to tell you the importance of fluoride, because calcium doesn't have much to do with your enamel, fluoride does in fact strenghten your enamel. So no, you are not wasting your money on Evian water, but you may be using it for the wrong reason, calcium is not directly for your enamel, fluoride is the vitamin for your teeth.
Calcium has been shown to strengthen teeth if applied directly to the teeth in the presence of carboxylic acid. However, the amount of calcium present in Evian water is probably not high enough to make a difference. II would guess there is more calcium in club soda than there is in Evian. You'd be better off rinsing with one of those calcium-fluoride rinses, like Act, or chewing calcium-laced gum.
Calcium will not make any difference to the strength of your teeth. Please note that when dentists talk about "strength" in this context, we are really talking about the resistance of the minerals to dissolution. The uptake of fluoride has a positive effect in this regard.
Evian water has no fluoride, and low calcium, so it would be less helpful to your teeth than fluoridated tap water. And it's a lot more expensive.
