Yes, it's true. The demand in this field is pretty high because there are few people who desire it as a career. Go for it.

My father owned one of the largest denal labs in Texas for almost 20 years. I can tell you, its very long hours and a lot of work. The pay can vary depending on where you are located and your level of expertise. In general, unless you specialize in a certain type of specialty porcelain, implant/case planning, or a manager you may make a lot of money.

Though it is best to get your CDT license, it isn't necessary to be hired as a dental tech. Although, you are required to have a CDT if you want to own your own lab. A lab must also be certified with the NADL (http://www.nadl.org/). I would start there.
