I'm sure that if you ask any good dentist, they would give you gas. I had some surgery done and I was awake and I was getting so scared so the doctor gave me some laughing gas and it really helped.
Most dentists now have nitrous oxide to help the patient.
Yes, I believe they still do that. Heard it's laughing gas though so it shouldn't be too bad plus it'll make you feel good. Afterall, it's a sedative.
Call around, its harder to find a adult DDS with nitrous because of malpractice insurance, it has gotten too pricey.
If you're terrified of dentists, I highly recommend finding one who does "sedation dentistry". We found one for my husband, and for the major procedures, you are given not only nitrous, but a few other drugs to make you sleepy/loopy.
It's not cheap, and there's no guarantee that your insurance would cover everything (though a good dentist like mine has somebody whose whole job is to figure out how to get as much covered as possible!). But IMO the biggest advantage to sedation dentistry, even if you aren't phobic, is that you can roll several procedures into one session and further minimize your time in the dentist's chair.
Try to overcome your fear by finding a good dentist that can treat you without gas. Someone who can gain your confidence and trust and is willing to spend the time with you needed for you to overcome your fear. Gas does make the experience better for you but does nothing to address your dental fear.
