Question about braces?

I am almost 21 years old. I have needed braces my whole life but my parents could never afford them. My insurance is very good and I am considering getting braces. Here are my concerns.

*I think that I might look like a dork with braces at the age of 21.
*I'm not sure if I can slide doing the Invisalign braces, my teeth are crooked on the top and I have the 'vampire' thing going on.
*My teeth are already stained from smoking and soda, will I have really bad stains after braces?
*I have a tongue ring, will this affect them?
*Last but not least, and this may be a little too adult, but it is a legitimate question. Do braces greatly affect kissing and oral sex?

Thanks guys!

Check out this site - it's for adults with braces. They may not answer all your questions, but they do have a discussion group, I believe.

1. Try getting them at 41. I'm getting them on tomorrow! Any dorkiness will be overcome when they come off and you have a beautiful smile.

2. I personally don't want Invisalign - it takes longer, I believe you have to take them out to eat, and your length of treatment depends on how good you are about wearing them. Plus I suspect you might develop a lisp and a bit of mushmouth when talking. I'm doing ceramic - better than metal mouth! There's also an option to have them put on the insides of your teeth - but obviously that would rule out oral sex!

3. Good question - I'll have the same issue. All you can do is keep your teeth as clean as possible while the braces are on, and if you do have some staining when they come off, some time with whiteners should set you up. (Notice I didn't suggest not smoking. I mean, let's get real!)

4. I don't know - probably not, unless you got the "inside" braces.

5. I don't know - the last time I had braces I was in 5th grade, and I wasn't doing any of that! lol I don't know about kissing, but I think oral sex would still be ok. You might just be a little more careful, but they're on the outside so if anyone is going to get hurt, it would probably be you!
