Dental/ortho people please!?
My gums aren't looking too good akording to my ortho people, so I'm wondering what can I do (besides flossing) to bring down the inflamed/puffyness. Also, do you recomend any toothpaste, mouthwash, or toothbrush for the best results?
Answers:
I just started going to an orthodontist & last week I had periodontal scaling done on my gums because they were tender & would bleed when I brushed.
They do not any longer. They gave me Peridex for a mouthwash, but it is Prescription only. They told me the best mouthwash available over the counter is calle Peroxyl by Colgate. It is essentially Minty Flavored Hydrogren Peroxide. My dentist also said he has no recommendation on toothpastes. He says it is the brushing that people need to do more often. He recommended soft bristel toothbrushes for the best long term result.
im not a professional or anything but i had the same problem and was told to make sure i brush my teeth up closer to my gums

if you have frequent gum infections and caries -- get it treated
Your "ortho people" should have given you more information than your "gums aren't looking too good!"
1. Get to a periodontist ASAP.
2. Learn to brush your teeth properly if you're in braces or not.
3. Learn to floss your teeth properly if you're in braces or not.
4. Brush and floss after each meal.
5. Use a flouride while in braces. PerioMed or Neutral Rx (both are by prescription and a flouride should have been supplied by your orthodontist if in treatment.)
6. Buy a Sonicare (electric toothbrush) or use a Colgate total toothbrush and their toothpaste, whether in braces or not.
7. See your dentist every 6 mores or more frequently if your periodontist suggests if you're in orthodontic treatment or not.
Result: Enjoy healthy gums and sweet smelling breath! (whether your teeth or straight or not)
This is not very scientific, but I am starting to think that SOMETIMES, this is just a normal response to tooth movement. I mean, the braces unleash all kinds of enzymes to dissolve bone and some of this may be effecting the gums. I have seen a few kids who had IMMACULATE oral hygiene and they just could not get the swelling to go away until the braces were removed. I've seen other kids who have TERRIBLE oral hygiene and, even with braces, their gums look decent.
Maybe it's just you and you won't be able to make it better. Don't feel guilty about it, but just do the best you can.
I see this problem in ortho patients all the time. You should get some floss threaders, which will make it easier to floss. Having braces does not mean that you can not floss. Also you can use a proxy brush, that has a small brush to get up and around the brackets. You need to brush more often than most people due to food and plaque getting stuck on the braces.
Flossing is the most important thing for healthy gums. You should do it after every meal but at least once a day. My dentist advised me once, way back in the day, to get a sonicare toothbrush to help remove the "gunk" from in between my teeth. It is also possible to have unhealthy gums do to hormonal changes or pregnancy. So if either of these are the case.
Also make sure to brush close to the gum lline at a 45 degree angle. But do not brush too hard, that is no good either. I use colgate total toothpaste. They do reccomend the gel type for the sonicare toothbrush. I use the reach flosser to make it easier to get way in the back.
