There is a chip on the front of my retainer that is only a few millimeters. Will I need to get a new one?

Do you ave a partial denture or is it just a retainer? If is just a retainer they would have to add a little crylic to it at the office. If is a partial dental with a tooth in it, you they can add more toothe structure to the tooth.
Yes. My friend's retainer was cracked and she didn't have it checked it caused her teeth to push out on the left side, so you need to have it replaced. ASAP. Its not able to support and properly align you teeth any longer.
You should get it checked out by your dentist. You would care if the tooth in front of it move by a couple of millimeters, wouldn't you? Don't waste all the good effort you put in wearing it. Besides, there is a good chance they can make a quick cheap and easy repair right there in the office.
Only if it makes the retainer dysfunctional, or irritates your mouth, it would be a good idea to speak to your orthodontist on your next visit.
I where a retainer and get chips and sometimes it spilts open so I have had mine replaced at a constant rate prob. once every 6months because I grind my teeth at night. In this case go in to the orthodonist and have them look at it, two things happen #1 they replace it in a week or so, or #2 you get to move your next appointment back!
