Questions about pulpotomy for my 5 year old?

My 5 year old son needs a pulpotomy for one of his teeth. He'll also be getting a stainless steel crown. He will be going to our regular dentist who has worked with children. Will they just use novocaine (sp?) to numb it up? Will this be sufficient to prevent him any pain? Do they use any other kind of anesthesia? He may need more work later, but I don't want to traumatize him and make him afraid of going to the dentist in the future. I contemplated going to a specialist and having him go under, but I wanted to try this less drastic way first. He is pretty compliant and brave (I hope!). From what I've researched, this will go down to his nerve and I'm just hoping only the initial shot of novocaine will be the worst part. I'm not sure how to prepare my son best. I'll probably be more anxious than him!

in my experience, parents seem to worry more than kids. as far as the person who asked "why fix a baby tooth", it is INCREDIBLY important to fix this tooth. a pulpotomy is also called a "baby root canal" so i am pretty sure that the tooth they are working on is a baby tooth. for this tooth to need a pulpotomy, it must have pretty severe decay that has reached the nerve. this can be very painful for your son and cause severe infection and swelling that can spread to other parts of the mouth/body. you also need to keep the tooth in the mouth as long as it is supposed to be there, to keep the space open for the permanent tooth and possibly avoid him needing braces in the future. ask your dentist if they ever use nitrous oxide on kids. (laughing gas). this can really help some kids. they will put a topical anesthetic on the gums to numb them before they do the injection to numb the tooth, so he shouldnt feel much at all. some kids don't react at all to anesthetic injections and others completely freak out as soon as you touch them. there's really no way to tell how your son will react. be sure to act like you are NOT worried, no matter how worried you are. your son looks at you to see how to react to this, so if you are scared, he'll be scared. i;m sure that you will both be fine, best of luck!
Probably you are! You dentist needs the patient to be atanding steel, so if novocaine is not strong enough, he or she will give you child something stronger, I am sure he/she has it but they want to try something light first. I want you to think about how to prevent this he is too young to need this kind of procedures, ask your doctor, he might need fluoride, calcium, or other vitamins. Hope it helps. Relax, trust your dentist. Good luck
I'm confused. Is this being done on a baby tooth or his adult tooth? If it's his baby tooth, why would you put him through all that only to have the tooth come out soon anyway? I can't believe he has adult teeth yet.

If this is a baby tooth, this dentist is scamming you for money. It happens a lot. There have been many parents on here from all over that have had the same thing. Dentists wanting to do all this dental work on baby teeth.
All your son will need to for the procedure is to be numbed up, which isn't too bad. It's best if you don't talk about it too much with him; let the dentist and his staff explain things to him. Try not to show your anxiousness to him or he will begin to get nervous himself. Having the pulpotomey done won't feel any different to him then if he was getting a filling. They'll probably recommend that you give him some children's Tylenol before the numbness wears off and to keep him on that for a day or so. Good luck & try not to worry so much!
I'm a dentist.

In all honesty lady, you should be more concerned about the doctor than your child! Working on kids is an absolute pain in the @$$--dealing with their constant squirming and inability to keep their mouths open.

Anyway, a single shot of Lidocaine is usually adequate to completely anesthetize the tooth.

Keep in mind, though, that having your child "go under" for his treatment may be a less drastic way to go if he's apprehensive. Sometimes it's better to be put to sleep and have all the work carried out at once.
a pulpotomy isn't the worst thing to do to a kid, since they will lose the tooth anyway, but it is not a biologic procedure and we would pull it if it was not savable.

do not get the stainless crown. it has nickel. the government just added nickel to the list of known cancer causing agents a few years ago. nickel allergy is very common and i have been talking to a lady who has a 9 year old with a stainless crown and wants it off, says it is itching. do not get novacaine. it has epinephrine in it. i recommend scandonest 3% non-vasoconstrictor. i recommend you go to a biologic dentist. if you need a list of sites to try and find one, email me.
