I am a 70 year old female. I am recovering from surgery to replace my jawbone with a bone graft from my hip.?

How long is the normal recovery time for this procedure? I had no problems and not a lot of pain but I can't seem to get my energy back to normal. It has been six weeks since the surgery.

Answers:
I'm a dentist.

Well, that all depends on what you mean by "can't seem to get my energy back to normal". It also depends on how far out you are from the surgery. Obviously, you're not a young lady, so recovery is going to be longer for you than a 50 year-old woman.

If you're ambulating reasonably well, eating, drinking, voiding, and having normal bowel movements (all of these would be required prior to discharge from the hospital), you're considered fine. As long as you're contuing to do these things normally, I'd say there's little to worry about.

Remember, they cut you in multiple places, gouged bone from your hip and put it in your jaw. This is a fairly significant surgical procedure and at your age healing is a longer process. It's important that you maintain your caloric intake, including adequate amounts of protein. This is very important for proper healing.

Of course, make sure that the surgical sites are healing normally. I'm assuming that you've seen the surgeon since the procedure, and that he/she has confirmed that things are progressing normally.
First of all I don't mean to be rude... but the age factor is there also the older you get the longer it takes to heal... your body is trying to heal two places at once and both places are used on a daily basis all day long.. have patience.

I am in my 40's had my back fused in January and I am still suffering and trying to heal
Probably around 4 months to heal to the peak of what you body can heal. But you'll never be like before.
Hi silkydogsmom

Here are a couple links that might help.

One is about nutrients to take for best surgical outcome. Although, in part, it's about preparation for surgery, I don't see why many of the suggestions can't apply to your situation now.

The other is about enhancing your immune system, because, like many other big life events, having surgery can be a major source of stress on the body, whether the outcome is good or not.
