Afraid to loss his teeth. What are the alternatives?

My husband has had great teeth all his life, now that he has diabetes 2 the dentist tells him he has lost bone mass in his mouth because of the diabetes. Without having surgery what can he take to strenthen and build bone mass. Surgery is a last resort they want to take out his teeth & replace them.

There is only one way to build bone in the mouth after it has been lost due to periodontal disease. But not everyone is a candidate for it and only about 300 dentists in the US have this laser. It is called a PerioLase. You might check into that, but that is a flash in the pan, cause it may not even be an option for him. Unfortunatly I see people with diabetes everyday who have developed periodontal disease. I am afraid that extracting his teeth and getting dentures may be in his future. But he might be a candidate for an implant "snap on" denture.

Well your dentist is absolutely right that it is due to DIABETES because diabetes has a tendecy to make human body infection prone.and inside the oral cavity it causes inflamation of gums and bone, leading to conditions known as GINGIVITIS(inflamation of gums) and PERIODONTITIS(inflamation of gums and reduction of the surrounding bone).
Unfortunatley the problem is that if your teeth is cavitated you can get it restored but if your gums move away from their natural place and if the surrounding bone reduces then there is very little treatment apart from extraction that can be done
but having said that knowadays dentistry has become very advance in the field of PERIODONTOLOGY(study of gingiva(gums) and their surrounding structure) and their are treatments which are called PERIODONTAL SURGERY which actually try to restore the gums to their normal position.and apart from that there are treatments where Bone Packs(Artificial replacement of bones which try to generate bone cells) are placed which try to restore bone loss, thus, strengthening the tooth.
but these treatments are not very successful so the best thing is to ask your dentst about their success rates, costs and alternatives..
The best thing a diabetic can do for his/her gums, eyes, etc., is to maintain good control The bone is not going to grow back, but it can stabilize at this new level and be maintained in a relative state of health.

The early days of dealing with diabetes are tough ones, but after a while, you "adjust" to the new lifestyle. Unfortunately, many Type 2 diabetics are not diagnosed for quite a while as their symptoms develop slowly and may not be noticed.
