How can a get myself to brush lighter/more gently?

You should start with the type of toothbrush you use. Make sure you are using a soft bristle. Also, try not to brush your teeth & gums in a hurry. If you concentrate on brushing softer you will. :)
Just tell yourself if you brush too hard, your gum line will receed and abrasion will occur. if you still don't stop, you're teeth can eventually fall out. But you're actually only supposed to brush as hard as you would if you were brushing the surface of a peach. it's less about the pressure and more about the technique. loosen up that grip and slow down. good luck!
Always hold your brush with your fingertips, not a death grip. It's hard to apply too much pressure when you're using only the tips of your fingers. Also, some people find the sonic toothbrushes helpful in reducing "scrubbing" habits. They don't require much movement at all, just lightly hold against the tooth surface and let it do the work for you.
Get a Sonicare toothbrush - you don't have to do any kind of "scrubbing" motion with your hand at all. Just hold the brush at your gumline and let the brush do all the work - it's foolproof and you may even end up with whiter teeth!
My fiance was told by his dental hygienist that he was brushing too hard (his gums were receeding because of it). Therefore I bought him a cheap (8 bucks) CrestPro battery operated toothbrush. By having something do the brushing action for you it can help you by brushing more gently. The dental hygienist noticed the difference in his teeth after he started using the crestpro toothbrush. He still will brush hard if he uses a manual toothbrush and will always brush lighter with the battery operated one.
So buy any electric or rechargeable toothbrush and let the brush do the work. Just gently hold it against your teeth and slowly move it around your mouth. Always brush for 2 minutes.
Run your SOFT toothbrush under hot water. Hold your toothbrush between your thumb and first finger only it will be nearly impossible to brush to hard. Good luck.
