Bone graft is not sterilized? DENTISTS ONLY PLEASE?

HI , I wrote recently about bone graft from mineralized freezed dried human cadaver bone , after extraction i had about 2 weeks ago from university miami, I contaced the university to find out how bone is cleaned, and dr. there said it is NOT sterilized, just freeze dried, He said some banks also do gamma radiation, and chemical gas sterilization, but they do not, they test donors and only freeze dry the bone. what do you think about this? I am concerned.. please let me know if you know anything...thank you.

hi

im a dentist

mineralized freezed dried human cadaver bone are NOT sterilized just because they dont need to be so.

the hospitals do plenty tests before collecting the bone from the cadaver, and if only 1 of the tests give positive, they do not use it.

another reason is that the graft is only mineralized material. the process eliminates all the living materials from the bone. in the end of the process, calcium and phosphates structure is all that remains. that means no reason to sterilize something that do not contain anything live on it at all.

the hospitals follow international protocols. dont worry, ull be ok. they follow this same protocol either if u are in a big hospital from a big city of USA or in a mid-small city in brazil, where i am.
Doesn't freezing kill all bacteria?
"Freeze dried" bone _is_ sterile. Put "freeze dried bone graft sterile" in a search and you will come up with about 75.000 hits.
I'm a dentist.

Linda, may I suggest that you actually read the responses to your questions--especially the ones written by doctors?

I thought I told you that you had absolutely nothing to worry about because these graft materials are almost 100% safe.

There are people a hell of a lot smarter than you and me who design these products. The FDA ensures that these things are safe for medical use.

Is it foolproof? No. Nothing is. Mistakes and errors occur from time to time. Just the same way an error can occur in the manufacturing of an airplane, causing you to plummet to your death.

Calm down. We don't use these things unless we know they're safe. The FDA doesn't allow these things to be used until they've been proven safe.
Since you've already gotten your dentist responses, I'll jump in.

I had a bone graft with that kind of bone about 2 years ago and I've been fine.

I had spoken with my brother about it - he's a dentist - and he mentioned that they would probably be using those materials. Since he's an experience dentist AND my brother I'm pretty confident that it's all good.

And then of course the fact that my tooth is quite stable two years later. No problems whatsoever!
