Not if you have a pain shot and good old "laughing" gas! Ask for them both!
Not during the process, if you have a good dentist. You're well numbed at that time. But it probably hurts before you go in, or you wouldn't be having it done. And it will be sore for awhile afterwards, too.
I've never had one .. but my father had one, but this was 20 years ago .. and from what I have heard in general . . .it certainly isn't any fun. But with the novicane and other medications that they give you now during the procedure .. I doubt that it will hurt very much at all. :) Good luck !
They're not suppose to. You'll be nice and numb so you shouldn't feel anything. They do take a long time (about an hour and a half) and are very boring.
If you have an active infection where your tooth is just flared up with pain, doing a root canal right away will be uncomfortable. An infection in the mouth will counteract the anesthesia and it will take much longer to get you numb, but you should still be able to get numb. Your dentist may put you on an antibiotic and bring you back in a few days, giving the medicine some time to get in your body and calm down the tooth.
Root canals have come a long way from 20 years ago. They are fairly simple and quick to do with the latest instruments and technology, decreasing the amount of post op pain in the end. You may be sore afterwards, but only if you had an extensive infection that still needs to clear up. Nothing that some ibuprofen cant fix!
Root canals are like teenagers. 9 out of 10 are no problem at all. You just hear about the bad ones.
I had a root canal 3 - 4 months ago. I was in the dentist's office about 50 minutes and had absolutely no pain.
