im getting a 1st molar cut out tomorrow...WILL IT HURT?

i had a root canal done and then a retreatment (well the retreatment didnt get to be finished because when i went for the second part, the rubber dam hurt so bad when he put it around my tooth, so he referred me to the oral surgeon) my tooth has a crown on it. they are going to just numb it up and cut it out while i'm awake. will it hurt because when the endodontist put the rubber dam on my tooth after i was numb, i thought i was going to die..so even though they numb my mouth, will i feel any pain?

The endodontist probably only gave you an injection on the inside of your jaw to block the nerve that goes to the tooth. The gum on the outside is fed by another nerve. The oral surgeons will block that nerve also. Definitely. (This is thinking about a lower molar. If it's an upper, just reverse my terms as far as the "inside" and "outside" nerves.)

I expect that they will first cut the top portion of your tooth off and then cut the tooth from side to side to separate the roots into individual roots. These will them come out much easier than the whole tooth wold come out. It is a way to keep it from breaking in a random, uncontrolled fashion, and it ends up being much less traumatic to you. You can expect LESS pain after the surgery than if they were to plain old extract the tooth in one piece.

No, it won't hurt(it feels really weird though), but make sure when he cuts it out, he gets all the pieces. I had the same thing you did and I was in pain for months and it got infected. I went back to him and he got very mad at me and said that it was a perfect procedure. Two years later, I had a special 360 degree x-ray and the dentist saw the piece of tooth and cut it out for me.

I also got sinus problems, because that piece of tooth was in there so long :) Next time I will demand antibiotics for a procedure like that if I suspect any type of swelling.

yes u will certainly feel the pain especially when they will use an anesthesia on your mouth the dentist said that they will use anesthesia so it will not get hurt but when inserting or putting anesthesia in your mouth they will use a syringe or in other words they will insert an injection with a 3 inch sharp needle on your mouth and it will stay there for 5 to 10 minutes so u have to undergo that pain okay. or there are other ways. they will let u sleep by putting an oxygen mask so u will feel sleepy but that's not a good idea i think the one with the needle is best cause ur awake and u can see whats happening in your mouth okay thanks

My goodness you've gotten some wing dingers for answers! You got a couple of decent ones too but Geez!you'd think people be a little kinder. I have worked in the Oral Surgery field as an assitent for 20 years on and off. Forget about what the endodontist did to you. Oral surgeons work completely differently. They will make darn sure that the area is completely numb before they start the procedure. I hope you have a good Oral Surgeon. That's the key my dear. A qualified highly skilled Oral surgeon will make the experience as pain free as possible. Then you just have to follow all the after surgery directions to the letter and you should be just fine. A good highly skilled qualified Oral surgeon does these kinds of extractions all the time. Of course each patient is different and presents their own set of cicumstances but a good Dr. will take all these issues into consideration and most likely do a fine job. Good Luck
